Pain relief

Acupuncture has been scientifically proven beyond any doubt to treat conditions such as dental pain, nausea and vomiting, as well as giving temporary relief to pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee, and tension-type headaches.

However it can also help with a whole variety of pain-related conditions. The above-mentioned conditions have been tested in Western style gold-standard double-blind placebo controlled trials. In 2009, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS as a cost-effective short-term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain. The NHS website has a page about the evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture.

As Chinese Medicine addresses the person as a whole, symptoms and underlying cause, your points prescription will be unique and will address the site of pain as well as the origin of it. This might mean collecting a whole lot of details about what your life and your well-being is like now and when your condition started, and connecting the dots.

Depending on how symptoms present, I particularly like to combine acupuncture with either TuiNa therapeutic massage, or all the adjunct therapies, including moxibustion (heat), cupping, or Gua Sha. This greatly improve effectiveness

Case Study (mane changed to preserve anonymity): ostearthritis
Anna is a retired teacher, who came to me first for osteoarthritis. She had it in all her joints, but especially the knees and couldn’t do her beloved walks anymore. She also suffered from sinusitis and her digestion wasn’t very efficient. Her first episode started years ago after she contracted a virus in Africa. This was followed by cystitis, then arthritis. All her symptoms disappeared until she retired and it all came back. We did work locally on her knees, or back when required, but also used a lot of moxa to boost her digestion. As the pain got under control, she resumed walking, to the point she could complete a very long walk in the Pyrenees. The pain occasionally comes back, but soon managed again with a couple of booster sessions. (see testimonials)
